DMACK Aims To Be The Wizard Of OZ

Fresh from a stunning second overall on its home round of the FIA World Rally Championship, DMACK will aim to set another series of fastest stage times on the other side of the world next week.

Rally Australia will see the WRC tyre manufacturer aim to stay on top ‘down under’ after setting the highest number of unbeaten stage times on a single rally this season.

Estonians Ott Tänak and Raigo Mõlder once again lead the charge for the DMACK World Rally Team in the season-ending finale. Since using their new British-built DMACK gravel tyres, the pair have scored fastest times on every gravel rally this season – from the hot, abrasive tracks in Sardinia to the muddy Welsh forests.

And, with mixed road conditions in Australia, they will be chasing more top times in their Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

DMACK has nominated its hard compound GH21 to cope with the hard base roads around Coffs Harbour in New South Wales. The fast, flowing stages across the open countryside are often coated with loose gravel – perhaps handing an advantage to Tänak who is running further down the order.

In stark contrast, some of the Aussie action takes drivers through soft, secluded stages in the jungle. Narrow roads require a more technical approach with dense trees letting in chinks of unexpected sunlight to test a driver’s focus.

For the softer roads, and in the case of any rain, Tänak will also have access to the soft compound GS61. In total, WRC crews can use a maximum of 24 tyres over the weekend.

Thursday’s Rally Show launches the event before drivers head south on Friday to tackle a double loop of four main stages around Macksville followed by a blast through the super special stages.

Saturday is the toughest day when the 50.8km Nambucca stage is tackled twice while Sunday heads north to Wedding Bells for five final day tests.

Dick Cormack, DMACK managing director, said: “It would be great to finish our most successful season with another strong performance on gravel. Both our hard and soft compound tyres have taken fastest times this year and the aim is to continue that performance. The fast stages and road position should suit Ott so we’re looking forward to a positive result.”

Ott Tänak said: “Rally Australia is a special event and one that I really like. It’s a real mix of conditions and a proper challenge. The wide, hard roads are fast and flowing – really enjoyable to drive on. Then in the forests it’s really tricky and you have to be careful, especially with the changes in shade and light. I’m looking forward to it.”
