Ahlin Takes Third Victory On Dual Surface Event

• Fredrik Ahlin takes third BRC victory of 2017.
• Retakes lead of MSA British Rally Championship.
• Nine consecutive wins for DMACK.
• Only tyre company to win mixed-surface Nicky Grist Stages.

Fredrik Ahlin and Torstein Eriksen moved back into the lead of the MSA British Rally Championship after winning the Nicky Grist Stages today – making it nine consecutive overall victories for DMACK drivers in the series.

The Scandinavian pair, in their CA1-Sport Skoda Fabia R5, took a 47.5 second victory on the mixed-surface event – their third win of the season. The only round of the year to be run on both gravel and asphalt surfaces, Ahlin used the full range of DMACK tyres during the Builth Wells-based event in Wales.

With dry conditions creating huge dust clouds on Saturday’s gravel stages, running first on the road proved an advantage for Welsh duo Osian Pryce and Dale Furniss in their Spencer Sport Ford Fiesta R5. Making the most of their local knowledge and clear vision, they won five of the eight stages to maintain a 19.3 second overnight lead.

Using DMACK’s DMG+2 gravel tyre in GH43 medium compound, Ahlin was quickest on the remaining three stages to hold a solid second, with four DMACK runners in the top-five after the opening day.

With an extended end of day service allowing teams sufficient time to change cars to Tarmac specification, competitors set off to tackle the tricky asphalt roads of the Epynt military range.

Ireland’s Keith Cronin in his M-Sport Fiesta R5 was expected to mount an asphalt attack but, despite going fastest on stage 10, he went off the road just two tests later and retired. The same stage also claimed rally leader Pryce. Ahlin had slashed Pryce’s advantage to just eight seconds and now found himself with a healthy lead.

Using the soft S6+ compound initially and switching to M6+ medium, Ahlin extended the gap to nearly a minute before controlling the lead to the finish. His victory means DMACK is the only tyre company to have ever won the popular mixed-surface event.

Cameron Davies was the overnight leader in the Junior category using DMACK's rally-winning R2 tyres but a failed water pump caused damage to his Peugeot's engine and he was forced out.

Dick Cormack, DMACK managing director, said: “This was always going to be a tough event as competitors had to deal with both surfaces over the weekend. However, Fredrik and Torstein managed the challenge better than anyone else. They used our latest products to take stage wins on both gravel and asphalt, demonstrating their, and DMACK’s, adaptability to the range of surfaces and conditions.”

Fredrik Ahlin, Nicky Grist Stages winner, said: “It was a really strong weekend for us and great to take our third win to move back into the championship lead. We struggled with road position and dust on the first day but the car was fantastic today. After the morning stages, we moved to the medium DMACK tyre and made a few tweaks to the set-up and it was just great to drive. After opening the gap, we controlled it to the end.”
